Fairfield Block Gains Heritage Status: A Historic Milestone for Arpeg

We are thrilled to announce that the Fairfield Block at 1601 Douglas Street in downtown Victoria has officially been designated as a heritage building.

We at Arpeg are thrilled to announce that the Fairfield Block at 1601 Douglas Street in downtown Victoria has officially been designated as a heritage building.

This recognition, granted during the January 9, 2025, City Council Meeting, marks a significant achievement for our family-owned company and highlights our dedication to preserving history while fostering modern living solutions.

Built in 1912 and designed by architect Henry Sandham Griffith, the Fairfield Block is a notable example of Edwardian architecture, featuring a distinctive tan and cream-coloured brick facade, large arched windows, and decorative cornices. Its prominent location at the northeast corner of Douglas and Cormorant Streets has made it a significant landmark in Victoria’s commercial core. Over the years, it has housed various businesses, including the beloved Sally’s clothing store in the 1950s and 1960s.

A Legacy of Heritage Preservation

Arpeg has been family-owned since 1956 and is now run by the third generation. We have a long-standing passion for preserving history, demonstrated in projects like the Mason’s Hall facade at The Beverley in New Westminster and the restored boardroom at the Georgia Medical-Dental Building in Vancouver. This latest recognition continues our tradition of blending heritage with innovation.

In addition to the Fairfield Block, we are also exploring new opportunities for heritage preservation, including the Burns Ranch farmhouse.

We look forward to bringing new life to the Fairfield Block while honoring its past and creating a vibrant space for the Victoria community.
